Popular culture has taught us over time that any encounter with a vacuum environment always ends up in a tragedy. In fact, it is highly unlikely that you will ever find yourself in the middle of a vacuum environment in your lifetime. Research has shown us that even space experts from NASA have to reconstruct very huge vacuum environments if they want to test the hardware that they intend to send to the outer space into nothingness.

By definition, a vacuum is any environment that has no form of matter. The definition may extend to refer to regions that have low gaseous pressure in comparison to atmospheric pressure. There are very many things that we do on a daily basis that are made possible by the existence of a vacuum. Some of them are as discussed below.

1.Vacuum in machines

There is no other industry that employs the use of vacuum technologies more than the machinery industry. A typical example is the use of vacuum actuators. These are mainly used in driving other devices especially in motor technology. The actuators are designed in such a way that they employ the vacuum pressure to generate energy that powers these secondary devices. A case example in the automobile industry is the headlights. In addition to that, we also have other accessories such as windshield wipers and ventilation systems that are powered by the energy generated from the vacuum technology.

While the technology has been effective in ensuring some of these things are made possible, it does not come without its fair share of challenges. In the actuators technology for instance, the vacuum levels may decrease which may negatively affect the functioning of the accessories. This may also cause overheating which turns out to be the most common problem that affects vacuum technologies since there is no oxygen that enables cooling by convection.

2.Outgassing

Outgassing is the process of expunging gasses that have been trapped inside certain materials that are used in crucial industries such as the construction industry and the aerospace industry. This is especially important because the presence of air particles inside some of these materials may significantly affect the structural integrity of the material and result in massive damages and even loss of lives. The process of outgassing is achieved by ensuring the material being outgassed is baked in a vacuum environment. The vapor pressure of the material will be raised and in turn the material will be boiled. The air bubbles inside the material will then leave the material and rush to occupy the space created by the vacuum. This process is mainly used by industries to remove air from rubber materials and in situations where a high degree of vacuum needs to be created and maintained.

3.Vacuum pumps

This technology is mainly used when deep well drilling is concerned. It works by expanding the volume of a container and reducing the pressure inside of the container. When this happens, an artificial vacuum is created inside the container which makes the atmospheric pressure higher than the air pressure inside the container. If you ask which process working vacuum pumps in answer I will say that ,This process is done continuously and repeatedly until the water climbs and reaches the ground level. The expansion and contraction of the container results in the water climbing up the pump and reaching the surface for fetching. 4.Vacuum cleaners

This is probably the most common use of a vacuum technology and one that most people are familiar with this vacuum cleaner and  Vacuum cleaners employ the principle of increasing and decreasing air pressure. When a vacuum cleaner is plugged into the power socket and switched on, a motor is activated and it starts rotating. The motor is attached to a fun that contains fun blades that help in pushing the air forward towards an exhaust port. When this happens, the air pressure in front of the fun is increased and the pressure behind the fun drops. The drop in the air pressure behind the fun means that the air pressure outside of the vacuum cleaner is higher than the air pressure. This forces the air outside to rush in and occupy the space created inside the vacuum cleaner. This is what causes the suction.
