While many consider sewing as an art that is starting to die, it can actually be a very rewarding and relaxing hobby as it allows you to repair clothes and produce stunning masterpieces.

You can use sewing to tailor clothes, bags, create quilts, or create pretty much about anything you have in mind. You can also learn to personalize and decorate various types of items.

Sewing – A Short History

Sewing is one skill practiced by almost all human civilizations across the world, present and past alike. Today’s archaeologists trace sewing all the way back to 30,000 BC or the Paleolithic eras. Needles were made from bone used for sewing skins and furs together. It was not until the third century BC in Germany when needles were made from iron. The oldest thimble was then discovered in a Han temple in China as part of the full sewing set. This thimble dates back from 200 BC to 200 AD.

It was in 1790 when the first ever sewing machine was made. The sewing machine formed stitches and was meant for canvas and leather, primarily to create boots. The first practical sewing machine was then invented in 1830. After 10 years, the machines were used for creating French military uniforms. Sadly, tailors destroyed the factory because they were afraid that the machines will replace them.

However, in spite of their success, the sewing machines failed to keep up with hand sewing. In 1846, Elias Howe developed a machine with the ability of sewing straight seams in perfection. Sewing machines were then improved and offered more services as years go by.

These days, most people sew with sewing machines and by hand and this is mainly because of necessity and preference. A lot of people claim that hand-sewn items are of higher quality while those items that were sewn using a sewing machine are usually more exact and precise. The machines that average people use are often too narrow or bulky to use on specific projects that is why it is usually necessary to be skilled in both forms of sewing.
